Walpurgisnacht / Beltane / Halfway to Hallowmas

The World/Inferno Friendship Society has a tradition of playing a huge Halloween show, Hallowmas. This year they started a new tradition with a Halfway to Hallowmas show, to celebrate Walpurgisnacht and Beltane at the Mercury Lounge in Manhattan.

Opening the show was Brook Pridemore, You Bred Raptors?, and the Funkrust Brass Band. I missed Brook Pridemore, but I LOVED the other two.

There were fliers floating around advertising Inferno’s new album, All Borders Are Porous to Cats, out in October! New Inferno in time for Hallowmas! Yes!

Costumes were encouraged at this show, so Doug was wearing a pineapple costume, but not many people bothered dressing up. Including me. It’s a Tuesday night, nah.

There was a contest to win a free ticket to Hallowmas with 5 contestants, and they all got tickets. A clown actually won though, and Gina joked that Dallow was dressed as Franz Nicolay.

You Bred Raptors?

Margot said she found them when they played with Thank You Scientist. I always forget non-COTFs are also familiar with them, lol whoops.

They were really good. Technical, heavy, but also kinda classical in a way. It was a real interesting sound, and I was v about it.

They wore different masks for each song.

One song was a waltz, and they passed out plain white masks for the audience to wear. I didn’t mind their masks onstage, but the white ones kinda creeped me out a bit, especially dancing with someone and not being able to see her face. A few people were having fun with them though, putting four or more masks on their heads at the same time.

The waltz seemed longer than “Heart Attack,” so I got tired and couldn’t last the whole song.

Funkrust Brass Band

OH MY GOD THEY WERE AMAZING.

I kinda imagined them as marching band kids who decided against growing up, which I loved.

Margot: “I don’t know why I’m reading Funkrust Brass Band’s entire vibe as ‘The Emerald City of Oz’s Marching Band’ but that’s what keeps running through my head. Damn they are FUN though.”

Everyone was super sparkly, wearing black and gold. So many friggin band members, literally a whole marching band. The singer uses a megaphone, so that’s cool and different. I like it.

A saxophone player stage dove, which was awesome.

There was lots of walking through the crowd, some coordinated dancing almost with their instruments. Really just fun.

Inferno

They started playing “One for the Witches” before it actually started, and then cut into “Tattoos Fade.” I was in the front for that, but didn’t stay there long.

Lust for Timing” WHATTT throwback, I love that they’re playing more Astral League songs.

I was REALLY happy to finally hear “Second Chance Saloon” again, but I was so exhausted after dancing to that one.

Honestly, the set list as a whole was really great and I was super happy about it.

Also I couldn’t help but think about how important this band has been to me since moving to NYC, and how much I love these people I was dancing with. Super sappy, but needed.

I don’t know who brought confetti for “Your Younger Man,” but they didn’t give me any.
