The Interrupters at Irving Plaza

St. Paddy’s Day show! That means… lots of drunk people. Lots and lots of drunk people. And I can speak from experience when I say the drinks are more liquor than soda at Irving Plaza. (Remember that time I got incredibly fucking drunk at Emo Night Brooklyn? Good times.)

Yeah, so, uh, as soon as I walked into the venue for the Interrupters (my California loves), I was surrounded by a drunk af crowd. Oh, this is gonna be a fun night.

I was definitely sending a long angry text to a certain someone when I noticed a drunk dude reading over my shoulder.

Dude: “He’s sending you a novel? Don’t respond to that!”
Me: “That’s me! And stop reading my texts! What the hell?!”

I was so pissed, I almost wanted to fight him tbh. That’s how you do St. Paddy’s Day the real Irish way. Too much whiskey and then a fight. Unfortunately I was not drunk. So I refrained and just moved away so he couldn’t continue reading my texts. Weirdo.

Masked Intruder

For once in my life, I wasn’t super late, so I was able to catch all of the opener, Masked Intruder. I’d heard of them, but wasn’t familiar with their music. They were a LOT of fun. I really enjoyed them.

“This song’s about how I don’t wanna be alone tonight. It’s called ‘I Don’t Wanna Be Alone Tonight.'”

They introduced just about every song that way. Honestly it was pretty damn amusing. The Interrupters even did it jokingly for one of their songs.

The members of Masked Intruder all wear—you guessed it—masks, in different colors.

For one song, Green got in the audience and danced with a girl. There was also a guy dressed as a cop, who danced onstage shirtless for another song.

I mentioned they were a lot of fun, yeah? So much crowd interaction and theatrical little bits and pieces. I loved it.

Room with a View

They talked about how they weren’t planning on playing “Room with a View” on this tour, but people kept requesting it, so they added it in. It’s a sad song. Beautiful, but sad.

Rumors and Gossip
Sound System (Op Ivy cover)

Before playing this song, they teased quite a few others: Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” NOFX’s “Linoleum,” Green Day’s “When I Come Around,” and Rancid’s “Time Bomb.” I would’ve been perfectly happy with Green Day or Rancid, but I love love love me some Op Ivy.

On a Turntable

A guy came out of the crowd with a flag, and someone else held Aimee’s hand from the crowd.

Family

The crowd was honestly fucking nuts. I got shoved around so much that I ended up on the totally opposite side of the venue from where I started. Normally that’s a sign of a good show, but I was too hot and tired to dance really, and the crowd was just too drunk for me. Is that an excuse? Absolutely. (Who am I, not dancing???)

But I really really love The Interrupters so much, so it’s always nice seeing them. They are always a good live show. So much fun, such good music, just UGH love.
